How to Compress a GIF for Discord

Updated October 2026

Discord enforces strict file-size and dimension limits on animated GIFs. Emojis, stickers and chat attachments have different requirements. Choose the use case first, then check the actual output size, dimensions and animation before uploading.

Discord GIF Size Limits (2026)

The table below summarises the official limits. Discord does not publish a single reference page for all of them, so we compiled these from the support articles and upload-error messages.

Use caseMax sizeMax dimensions
Custom emoji256 KB128 × 128 px
Custom sticker512 KB320 × 320 px

These limits reflect what we have verified as of October 2026. Discord may change them without notice; always check the upload error if a file is rejected.

Why Your GIF Exceeds the Limit

A screen-recorded GIF can become large when many pixels change between frames. GIF uses indexed-colour frames and LZW compression; repeated regions can be optimized. Three useful controls are:

  • Resolution — a 500 × 500 px GIF has 4× the pixels of a 250 × 250 px one.
  • Frame count — a 5-second GIF at 30 fps contains 150 frames; at 10 fps it has only 50.
  • Colour depth — GIF supports up to 256 colours per frame; reducing to 64 or 32 colours can cut size dramatically.

Compress Your GIF Step-by-Step

1. Choose the right preset

Open the Discord GIF Compressor. It targets 250,000 bytes and fits the animation within a 128 × 128 px box, leaving room below the 256 KB ceiling.

If you have an 8 MB upload requirement, use the8 MB preset or type a custom value on thehome page compressor.

2. Drop your file and compress

Drag your GIF onto the upload area or click to browse. Compression runs entirely in your browser — no server upload, no waiting for a queue. Click Compress for Discord. When it finishes you will see the output size and can compare the original and compressed animations side by side.

3. If the target is not reached

Very large or high-frame-rate GIFs sometimes cannot hit 256 KB without visible quality loss. If the compressor reports that the target was not reached, try these adjustments:

  • Use the GIF resizer to make a smaller input, then retry the emoji preset.
  • For manual control over colors, use Target Size mode on the home page.
  • The Discord preset already searches frame reductions while compensating delays. Preview the output for changes in smoothness.
  • Trim the animation to a shorter loop.

4. Download and upload to Discord

Once you are satisfied with the preview, click Download. In Discord, go to Server Settings → Emoji → Upload Emoji and select the downloaded file. If it is still rejected, check your server permissions, available emoji slots and the exact upload error. Meeting the size limit alone does not guarantee acceptance.

Common Mistakes

  • Renaming the extension to .png — Discord checks the file header, not the extension. The upload will fail or lose animation.
  • Uploading a video file as an emoji — use GIF for animated emojis; MP4 or WebM files cannot be used directly. Convert your video to GIF first.
  • Ignoring frame delay — If you manually drop frames, set each remaining frame's delay so the total animation duration stays the same. Our tool does this automatically.
